Impressing God

The other day I found myself before the Lord really wanting to lay hold of Him in a profound way. There I was, loving on Him, hoping to enter into a deeper realm of the spirit. I said, “Lord I want to impress You!” I thought to myself, “What am I saying? I can’t impress God.” In that moment I heard the Lord say, “You do Michael, you impress me very much.” I thought,”Wow, I do?” I Immediately felt His presence all around me. So I asked, “How can I do that? You are so magnificent Lord." He quickly replied, “With your songs, with your faith, with your love and childlike heart for Me.” I have to confess, I have never pictured myself as someone having a childlike heart for God.
As you can imagine, I was somewhat taken back by what I was hearing in my spirit. Impress God? Is it really possible to impress God? Whenever God speaks to me I digest His words for a few days. During that digestive period I become very obsessive in my thinking and not very focused on other matters. In those times I can come across as being rude or even uncaring because the majority of my thoughts are primarily focused on one particular thing; knowing God.
Eventually, everything comes together into a clearer understanding of what I heard the Lord say. As I begin to write it down, the spirit of wisdom and understanding comes upon me, enabling me to see further than I have ever seen before. So here is a brief summary of that encounter.
The word “impress” within the context of my experience, means to impact God emotionally. Webster defines “impress” as “having an emotional or cognitive impact upon someone.” This means that our actions can lastingly and emotionally impact God in a positive or negative manner.
So from a positive perspetive, whenever we worship the Lord He is emotionally stirred by the sound of our hearts. Not only is He emotionally impacted by the genuine intentions of our hearts, but I believe He is also impacted by the level of expertise that is behind the sound that is being made with our instruments. I am certainly not implying that God is more impressed with the most gifted or talented people. However, I do believe that whenever the quality of that gift or talent is offered up to the Lord, He is emotionally impacted by our desire to use the excellence of what we have to glorify His name.
When I hear the word, “impress” I think of impression. Impression refers to “image.” This means that the actions of our lives have the ability to make to make an impression on God to such degree that He is left with an image or imprint of that experience. There are many memories of our past, both positive and negative, that leave some sort of lingering imprint in our minds or heart.
ETERNAL EXPRESSIONS
Contrary to what some people may think, I believe God can easily be impressed. Obviously, He is not easily impressed by the foolishness of men, who in their own eyes think themselves to be wise. However, I have since learned that it is not as difficult as one may think to impress God with a genuine heart. Whenever we do something with God at the center of our intentions, He is left with a positive impression or imprint of our actions in that moment. Recently the Lord gave me a new song. As I sang the song to Him, I could sense His pleasure and delight all over me. Wow! God was impressed.
Since I’ve discovered how impressionable God can be, there is no doubt in my mind that heaven is filled with portrait acts of love. I believe there are galleries of images in heaven that reflect impressionable moments that occurred during our time of living on the earth. These heavenly portraits are eternal expressions of our love for God. These divine portraits are created through acts of kindness, blessing one another, songs of praise and worship, giving to the poor, forgiving, offering ourselves up as a living sacrifice unto the Lord, just to name a few. Without a doubt ,the greatest gallery of all consist of the powerful images of the life that Jesus lived on earth and the sacrifices that He made for all of mankind.
God was so impressed by the humility on Moses’ life that He was willing to wipe out the entire world, again, and start anew with Moses. God was so impressed with Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his only son that he called him the father of many nations. Joseph made such an impression upon the Lord at a young age that He purposed him to rule from the highest court in the world. David impressed God so immensely that, not only was he crowned king, but he was noted as a “man after God’s own heart.” These are just a few positive examples of how impressionable God can be because of our faithfulness and commitment to Him.
THE PERVERSION OF IMPRESSIONS
I believe one of the greatest assaults against the body of Christ today, is the perversion of impressions. This occurs when people strive to impress one another more than impressing God. They try so hard to impress someone, anyone, as being the best singer, the best musician, the best prophet, pastor or entrepreneur, that they lose their ability to impress God in a positive way. Right now God is interrupting the religious impressions that have left the world with a false image of whom He really is.
These divine interruptions are causing people to realize that God is much happier than the religious sector has portrayed Him to be. They are discovering that God is not some giant finger in the heavens waiting to thump someone on the head every time he gets out of line.
The love of God is becoming so widely known that countless people are being delivered from the dark images of their past. More and more people every day are being set free from the horrifying impressions of abuses that occurred during their childhood years. The perverted walls of worship are falling to the ground as well. For too long people have believed there were only a few accepted ways or methods to worship God. Yet now, they are realizing that the doctrines of men have tainted their freedom of worship with a false sense of righteousness which was born out of control and manipulation.
These perverted imprints caused many to believe that the door of God’s kingdom wasn’t just narrow, but completely closed off; closed off to anyone who would question the ceremonial practices of ancient days.
Because of these perverted views of God and heaven the new age movement was advanced. New Age doctrine capitalized on thousands of people who had been turned away by the religious system. They highlighted the church’s inability to break free from the shadow and types of biblical times. Thus, they presented the people with a new belief, that neither Jesus nor the church was the only way to gain access to the love of God. As a result, in their eyes, Jesus was no longer the only way to truth and life.
I believe one of the primary keys to ripping away the veils of darkness that now linger over so many in the world, is through an intense desire to impress God with everything that is within us. It’s time we regain the understanding of what it really means to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. God is waiting for His people to impress Him with an extreme love, toward Him and one another. This kind of love demands that we put aside the spiritual acrobats of trying to out-do one another because of insecurities or personal achievements. It means that we must genuinely prefer others before ourselves. Truly this will be the final torch that burns away the tares of deceit that have grown up in the hearts and minds of so many.
For it is written:
“This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends.” John 15:12-14
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." John 13:34-35
Now that is impressive!
